Google Maps Mobile now has Voice Recognition

Google has moved its popular Google Maps Mobile application one step ahead and added Voice Recognition to it. This allows users to easily search for their desired location by just saying where they want to go. This is a beta version for test purposes and it is currently available on a limited range of handsets including Blackberry Pearl 8110, 8120, or 8130.

Here's how you use it. You simply hold the left soft key, say you search and release the key and Google happily searches your desired result for you. Blackberry users can get the update here http://www.google.com/gmm

Solar powered radio

Keeping with our solar theme for today- check out this solar radio. The solarDAB radio created by Roberts is touted as the world's first solar powered digital radio. The best part of this solar powered radio, is that it doesn't actually require the sun to function. The radios has solar panels, as well as built-in rechargeable batteries that will allow it to play up to 27 hours consecutively. That's a lot of rocking.

Freecom Rugged Hard Drive is a Must for Adventurers and Dads

Freecom Rugged Hard Drive is a Must for Adventurers and Dads

My kids have a nasty habit of stepping on things. Personally, I don't try to understand it; I just want to survive it, but so far I have not been lucky. The other day, my messenger bag was lying on the floor, when my son walked by and *crunch*, he manage to crush my external USB drive. If only I had the Freecom ToughDrive Sport USB hard drive. I could have avoided 120GB of data loss.

The ToughDrive Sport is a fully rugged and encrypted external drive that will keep your data and your sanity safe. According to the manufacturer, the ToughDrive Sport should survive a fall from over six feet, withstand 300G of force while the drive is spinning, and over 1000G of force when the drive is not operating. The drive is USB 2.0 and can transfer data at 480Mbps, or even faster with the supplied "turbo" driver for Windows Vista/XP. The Freecom ToughDrive doesn't just provide physical protection; the 256 bit encryption will keep your data secure from sneaky humans as well as the clumsy ones.

The ToughDrive Sport is available from Freecom in a 250GB model for $144, a 320GB model for $170, and a 500Gb version for $241. The drives do have a 30% (approximately) premium above their non-rugged brothers, but is your data security worth it? If your kids are like mine, it should be.

Tsutaya: HD Films On Demand; with a bonus!

Tsutaya: HD Films On Demand; with a bonus!

Tsutaya, a japanease company has done some pretty amazing negociating with the film studios; as they have granted them licence to let HD copies of their films be downloaded, and then burnt to Blu Ray.

This is pretty amazing considering downloading films legally has barely taken off, with NetFlix being the only major streaming service, and it's only occasionally HD.

The fact that this service will allow you to download and burn to a blu-ray for you to keep perminantly is just brilliant; it's like buying a physical copy online, but without the delivery or the like. However, it does come at a price, a $40, about the same, if not a bit more than a retail copy of the film….worth it? Perhaps oneday….

Keep an eye on this.

Sony Cybershot DSC-W300

Sony Cybershot DSC-W300

Nothing is perfect, and few things in life are even close to perfect, but for around 300 bucks the Sony Cybershot DSC-W300 is close to being the perfect pocketable digital camera.

This camera can be a bit slow at times in its reaction to settings changes and menu acquisition but that's the only negative found by the testers.

Then again, the camera's reaction time to really important matters, such as shutter lag and image storage are just fine, so picture taking ability is not adversely affected.

I like German designed lenses because to me they yield excellent contrast and high resolution. Maybe it's a leftover from my film camera days but I also prefer the color rendition produced by German lenses. To me the images display a more "European" style of warmth without sacrificing accuracy.

This Sony boasts a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens and if it's at all like the one in a friend's Sony, a 7.1 MP camera, then it is top notch.

As usual there are too many details to go over on this 13.6 MP camera so check out the full review of the Sony Cybershot DSC-W300 Digital Camera and decide if there should be one in your future.

Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.

Just Released Olympus E-P1 Digital Camera Breaks New Ground

Some interesting developments are taking place in the world of digital cameras.

There's been a rush to miniaturize the already miniaturized digital camera but there are also some significant changes taking place in the area of camera body design.

Maybe I'm just used to film cameras but I personally like this trend of styling digital cameras more like the film cameras of not too long ago.

I especially like the "throwback 35mm rangefinder design" as I'll call it, such as exhibited by the newish Olympus E-P1.

The Olympus E-P1 is an interchangeable lens compact camera and a sensor similar in size to a DSLR's. To retain its sleek looks and keep weight down, there isn't a built in flash, which is more in line with higher end cameras.

Check out the Olympus E-P1 and see what you think.

Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.
